Department of Buddhist Studies was established in 1957 as follow up to the action initiated by the Government of India on the occasion of the celebration of 2500 years of Buddhism on 24 May 1956. This department, the first of its kind in India, was established with the primary objective of conducting research at the advanced level in various subjects related to Buddhist Studies.

The Journal of Buddhist Studies has been published by Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi, Delhi (India) since 1974.The Journal of Buddhist publishes research articles on an ongoing rather than a periodic basis which enhances the knowledge and understanding of any aspects of Buddhism. The objective of Journal of Buddhist Studies is to sustain a publication forum for information flow, exchange of ideas showcasing the variety of research works in the field of Buddhism.
A Journey to eternity started on the 15th December, 2010 morning under the leadership of Prof. Bhikhsu Satyapala. The members of the study team were Dr. S.M. Haldhar, Dr. A.K. Singh and Dr. C.S. Paswan. The train North East reached N. Jalpaiguri at 2:00 pm on 16th December, 2010. On that day Siliguri was politically disturbed but we took short cut route and reached Malbazar at 4:00 pm.
